Substitutes for Butter

Most people love dessert, but shy away from it (or should) because of the amount of fat most desserts contain. Did you know you can easily swap out all or part of the oil and butter in recipes for ingredients that are more heart healthy?

 

Here are some of my favorite substitutes for butter in recipes:

1. Greek yogurt- This makes cakes super dense, but it’s especially perfect for brownies! Jessica’s Dark Chocolate Yogurt Cake is delicious, easy, and protein packed.

2. Applesauce-Applesauce will make the dish less dense than Greek yogurt, but still delicious. This is perfect for muffins or other baked goods. These Oat Applesauce Muffins are a great option for a snack or breakfast.

3. Avocado- Surprising, right?? Avocado is full of healthy fats, so it works as a great substitute for butter or oil. Try out these Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies from Eat, Live, Run.

4. Diet Soda- This might sound kind of gross, but it works really well with boxed cakes and brownies. You can combine a vanilla cake with Diet Orange Soda, brownies with Coke Zero, or a chocolate cake with Cherry 7-Up. Use THIS recipe for reference.

5. Mashed Bananas- Mashed bananas work well with banana bread, which usually contains butter and oil. These Lighter Banana Muffins are easy, and don’t use butter or oil.

You can find recipes that combine two of these things like this Avocado Banana Bread or these Skinny Double Chocolate Muffins. Most of the time, you can substitute for butter in recipes on a 1:1 ratio. If you’re scared to substitute the entire portion right off the bat, then ease into it by using ½ butter/oil and ½ substitute.
