How To Get Clean After The Race!

We’ve all been there. You get home from Color In Motion 5K and discover that you’ve turned into a full on smurf. Before you start to panic, know that there is hope! We’ve rounded up some tried-and-true ways to get that pesky color out of your clothes, skin, and hair!

Before we get into cleaning techniques, it helps to know what the color is actually made of! Our color powder is of a food-grade dyed cornstarch and produced right here in the USA. While the color typically washes right out of everything it touches, it’s better to be safe than sorry. We recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty, just in case!

How To Get Color Out Of Clothes:

While you’re still at the event, or right after you get home, brush everything off! Try to get as much dry dirt and color off of your clothes as possible. This is the easiest way to get the color powder off, and it prevents additional staining!

Before you throw your clothes in the wash, mix together about ½ cup of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of regular laundry detergent. (This mixture doesn’t need to be exact, but is used for a reference.) Use this mixture to soak the stains! This should loosen the bonds of the color to the clothes.

Then wash the clothes how you normally would! We suggest washing your colored clothes separate from your regular laundry to prevent any bleeding.

How To Get Color Out Of Skin & Hair:

Most of the time the color will wash off of your skin with a shower using your regular soap of choice. For the more stubborn color, try washes/soaps with salicylic acid. This usually does the trick! It can also help to exfoliate your skin with a washcloth to remove excess color.

For those fair headed runners out there, you may find the color wants to cling to your hair a bit more than everyone else’s. Not to worry, we have a tip just for you! Again, the best way to beat staining is to prevent it happening in the first place. Pull your hair up and cover it, if possible. A lot of runners have recommended coating the hair in coconut oil before the race, and this makes a lot of sense! The oil will be absorbed and make it harder for the color to stick.

After the race, you will probably need to wash your hair a couple times. Try using dish soap on the first wash and your regular shampoo on the second. Follow everything up with a good conditioner to keep your hair healthy. The healthier the hair the harder it is for the color to stick around!

Keep in mind that it may take a few washes to completely get rid of any color, so rock that bold color! It’s totally in now!

Do you have any tips or tricks in regards to getting clean after a color type run? We’d love to hear from you!
